Swindon Borough Council has dedicated a new cemetery at Kingsdown adjacent to the Kingsdown Crematorium.  The cemetery will be available for burial in Lawn graves from Monday 4^th June 2007. These graves will be able to have a headstone type memorial only placed on the grave.

Later in 2007 Traditional graves where a full kerb set memorial may be placed will be available.  Cremated Remains plots where two caskets of remains can be placed will also be available at that time.  A desktop tablet type memorial can be placed on the Cremated Remains plots. 

Woodland burial graves will be available in 2008. As a woodland area it will not be possible to place any memorial on these graves. 

There is sufficient burial space available on current trends to meet the needs of the Borough for the next twenty years.

Lawn Graves

All burials in graves in the Lawn sections will be naturally head to memorial with the grave orientation East/West in the traditional manner.  The grave will be laid to lawn from either turf or seed as soon as ground, weather and seasonal conditions are suitable.  During this delay the soil settles and extra soil is placed on the grave to keep the ground level.

Placing anything on the grave space, which will prevent this taking place, is prohibited.

There are no kerbstones, grave mounds or individual gardens in the Lawn sections.  Wooden crosses are not permitted and all planting is restricted to a soil border at the memorial end of each grave.

Memorials may only be fixed when six months have elapsed from the burial taking place.  This is to allow for settling of the grave after the burial and for lawn to be laid.

Opening times

The cemetery will be open from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at weekends and on public and bank holidays.

Chapel

There is no cemetery chapel currently at Kingsdown but it is projected that there will be a new chapel in the future. Any Burial requiring the use of a cemetery chapel rather than a local church could use the chapel at Whitworth Road cemetery and then move on to Kingsdown for the interment.
