Safe & Clean

Aims

The Safe & Clean campaign was launched in 2005 to demonstrate the commitment of the partner organisations to the well-being of neighbourhoods and to make real differences to communities.

The continued intention is to foster community pride and encourage residents to take responsibility for their own environments.

Safe & Clean Team

Each month Swindon’s Safe & Clean Team swoops on an area of the borough for a day of action.

Safe and Clean Swindon LogoThe team includes officers from:

  • Swindon Borough Council
  • Swindon Commercial Services
  • Swindon Police
  • The Probation Service
  • Fire and rescue services

Activities

Safe & Clean teams have:

  • Cleared away fly-tipping
  • Cleaned off graffiti
  • Given areas a general spruce-up
  • Cleared shrubs and planted
  • Identified abandoned cars
  • Ticketed untaxed cars
  • Swept major routes, footpaths, cycle tracks and subways

Partners

The campaign is run by the Swindon Community Safety Partnership which includes:

  • Swindon Borough Council
  • Swindon Primary Care Trust
  • Wiltshire Police
  • Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service
  • Wiltshire Probation Area
  • Wiltshire Police Authority

Achievements

During the first year of action almost 900 pieces of graffiti were removed and more than 1,000 residents were given fire safety advice by officers.

The team, on average 50 to 60 officers, has cleaned up play areas and during just one day of action took away 17 shopping trolleys.

Areas visited so far have included:

  • Lower Penhill
  • Toothill
  • Freshbrook
  • Pinehurst
