CitizenCard - Benefits to Young People and Parents

Why have a CitizenCard?

Ever tried to guess the age of someone? It is very difficult to assess the age of anyone but particularly difficult for adults to assess the age of teenagers. Everybody grows at different rates – if you are short for your age or tall for your age then make life easier for yourself and be able to prove your age when required.

Prove your Age

  • Be able to prove you are old enough to see an age restricted film or to rent that age restricted video or DVD if you are old enough!
  • Be able to prove you are eligible for a child's fare on the buses if you are under 16.
  • Avoid embarrassing confrontations over your age.
  • Be a responsible citizen, you have the right to be able to prove your age.
  • Old enough? Prove it if you are old enough to buy age restricted products.

First CitizenCard Free of Charge

  • Swindon Borough Council can offer you your first CitizenCard completely free of charge through the Rolling School Programme.
  • Each year, Year 8 pupils are usually offered the opportunity to apply for a CitizenCard through their secondary school during their summer term.

If you do not apply through the Rolling School Programme, but still want a CitizenCard, you can apply for a fee of £9 by using one of the independent application forms widely available from schools, Council Office Customer Service desks, libraries and many shops or by logging on to the CitizenCard website (www.citizencard.com).

Local Retailers

  • CitizenCards help traders of age restricted products comply with age restricted legislation. Trading Standards who enforce these laws have made traders aware that over 15,000 CitizenCards have been issued to young people in Swindon over the last few years. Therefore traders expect young people to have proof of age in the form of a CitizenCard on them.

Build your confidence and self-esteem.

Be able to prove who you are and how old you are.
