Strategic Purpose
The strategic purpose for the Fire Authority is to continue providing an efficient and effective Fire and Rescue Service, protecting the people in Wiltshire and Swindon, by working together with others to make our communities safer and stronger.
Community Safety
Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service’s community safety team has been working on the following projects over the past 12 months and will continue to do so in 2007:
Working with young people
Salamander Project – focusing on young people who have been excluded from school or even involved in crime, the project involves them in challenging physical activities on a fire station over the course of a week. The youngsters are helped to find their feet as citizens and encouraged to change their attitude to life.
Juvenile Fire Setters – youngsters who have been involved in deliberate or accidental fire setting can be given help through a specially designed and professional counselling service to deter re-offending.
Fire Cadets – we sponsor and run two fire cadet units that promote teamwork and an adventurous outlook on life for boys and girls aged 13 to 17.
Safe Drive, Stay Alive – youngsters on the brink of becoming drivers are being given a hard-hitting educational package designed to contribute to keeping them safe on the road. Created in collaboration with our community safety partners the ‘Safe Drive, Stay Alive’ roadshow uses real incidents, real victims and emergency and healthcare service professionals to bring home the potentially shattering consequences of poor driving.
Staywise – a website that combines the resources of agencies such as the police, fire and ambulance services to offer a one-stop shop for applied learning. Free to access and easy to use, this multi-media experience is available to all schools throughout the country – www.staywise.co.uk
Junior Good Citizen - working with Wiltshire police and ambulance service, the programme teaches safety to more than 4,000 children from primary schools across Wiltshire.
Safety in the home
Vulnerable people – we are working in communities and identifying vulnerable areas and those living within it. These areas are then targeted, offering home safety checks and free smoke alarms.
