Sustainable Development and Local Agenda 21.

An environmental, social and economic agenda for Swindon.

"Think globally, act locally and change personally."

At the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, over 150 nations, including the UK, committed themselves to an action plan for a better quality of life in the 21st Century, called Agenda 21. A firm pledge was made to protect the environment, improve society and have a stable economy.

Taking action now will shape a better world for future generations. But to succeed, every government, organisation and individual has a part to play in a world-wide effort to protect the planet's future.

The best way of achieving this is for councils, with their communities, to initiate and implement local action plans for their area; that is Sustainable Development.
