Air Quality - Pollution Control

Description of Service

Air pollution comes in many forms and poor air quality can damage health.

Large industrial processes that have the potential to cause air pollution require an authorisation under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Operators of these processes are required to comply with a range of conditions to ensure that emissions to the atmosphere are carefully controlled and are subject to regular monitoring and inspection.

Swindon Borough Council is responsible for developing strategy for local air quality. We are also responsible for monitoring air quality to ensure a safe environment. To do this we monitor air quality at 23 individual sites across the Borough of Swindon.

For those wishing to read the results of Local Air Quality Monitoring (LAQM), the following documents are available. All are in pdf format:

If you are concerned that pollution is occurring in the Borough of Swindon and this is having a detrimental impact on the quality of air, Swindon Borough Council has the necessary powers to be able to investigate the situation.

Service Levels

Swindon Borough Council has a statutory obligation to investigate all complaints involving poor air quality. When we receive such a complaint, we aim to provide an initial response within 2 working days.

In practice, however, the time taken to conduct a full investigate and take appropriate actions varies depending on a number of factors but the highest priority will be assigned to problems where a risk to health is evident.

Report a Problem

You can do this in a number of ways:

  • By telephone to the StreetSmart Team at the Swindon Direct Contact Centre on 01793 445501. For details of the Contact Centre opening hours, please visit the Swindon Direct web page.

  • In person, by visiting the Swindon Direct One-stop-shop. For details of the address and opening hours, please visit the Swindon Direct web page.
