Housing

Private Tenants Services

Swindon Borough Council recognize that privately rented housing provides a valuable source of accommodation. Unfortunately some of this accommodation can be of poor quality. In the worst cases its condition can even endanger the health and safety of tenants.

If you are concerned about the condition of your rented accommodation you should always discuss this with your landlord or managing agent in the first instance.  If, following this, conditions are not improved or you are unhappy with your landlords response, then the Council can often assist.

The Council's Residential Services Team is responsible for ensuring that privately rented housing is both safe and suitable for tenants.  They will deal with your complaint and where necessary can take legal action against your landlord if they refuse to co-operate.

Understanding your rights to decent rented accommodation:

  • Your privately rented home should be Decent and Fit For Habitation.  Follow the link words to find out more about these standards.
  • If your accommodation is a flat, bedsit or room, your landlord is also responsible for ensuring your safety in the event of a fire. This type of accommodation is known as Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO)

All tenants are recommended to find out about the standards they should expect.

Landlord Accreditation

Swindon Borough Council operates an Accredited Landlord Scheme for responsible landlords who have demonstrated to the Council that they meet satisfactory standards of letting. Details of the scheme and contact details for accredited landlords can be accessed via the link below.
