Why do I have to complete an application form?
Our application form helps us to assess the skills and knowledge that you tell us about and makes it easier for us consider your suitability against other applicants in a fair and consistent way. The reason why you cannot just send your CV is that it may not provide us with all the information we require to shortlist.
How do I request a large print or Braille application form?
To request a copy of our large print or Braille application form, please contact us by e-mailing jobs@swindon.gov.uk or telephone us on 01793 464439.
How does the closing date work?
The majority of jobs advertised by Swindon Borough Council are open for two weeks. The closing date displayed on this site is the date that the job will close and after which applications will no longer be received. Applications will be accepted up to 4.30pm on the closing date (see: How to Apply).
What if I am self-employed?; how can I provide referees?
Provide details of someone who can give you a professional reference. This must be someone who has known you in a professional capacity, not a friend or member of your family. An example could be an accountant, solicitor or client.
What if I have had breaks in my employment?
Not all skills and experience are gained in the workplace. If you are returning to work after a long break in employment, think of some examples of situations you have been involved in or projects you have undertaken at home that may require the skills we are looking for.
What if I have not been employed before and have no evidence of work experience to provide?
Always try and link the information you are telling us to the requirements of the post, eg: you may want to tell us about how you have organised your family life or how you feel the skills you have learnt at home or at school/college will help you undertake the duties of the job. The most important thing is to remember to tell us and give examples.
Where can I find out more about the Council in order to support my application?
Take a look at the rest of this website. It will provide you with sufficient background information for you to be able to understand the work that is carried out in the various departments.
Remember that Swindon Borough Council’s libraries provide free access to the Internet, e-mail and word processing. You must be a library member, and it is advisable to contact the library in advance to book a time.
How can I use the information sent out to its best advantage?
The recruitment pack contains a Job Description and Person Specification. It is important that you read and understand both the description and the specification for the post. When completing your application you need to relate your skills and experience to the details required in these documents. Doing this increases your chances of being shortlisted for the post.
I do not have all of the essential qualities listed on the person specification. Is it still worth applying?
No. We will not consider anyone who cannot demonstrate that they meet all of the essential criteria for a job.
Are all posts full-time?
Full-time jobs with Swindon Borough Council are 37 hours per week. If the post is part-time, the hours will be shown in the advertisement. The Council has a job share policy and considers requests for flexible working.
