Working in Swindon

Few places can claim to be so well situated: on a main motorway route, an hour from the world’s busiest airport, within the reach of two major ports and with easy access to all parts of the country.

During the last 50 years the urban area has developed from primarily a railway town of 75,000 residents to a major regional centre where 200,000 people live and work. Swindon has led the way in adapting to major change, embracing new technology, and it is one of Britain’s fastest-growing destinations.

There is something for everyone in Swindon. The fascinating history of the Great Western Railway has been brought alive at STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway, and the refurbished buildings of the historic railways are also home to Europe’s largest covered designer outlet centre and the National Monuments Record Centre which houses the archives of England’s heritage.

Swindon is a shoppers delight, but not only is Swindon a thriving commercial centre; within it boundaries there are delightful villages, Victorian parks, historic market towns and beautiful countryside.

When it comes to entertainment, Swindon’s got the lot: theatre, cinemas, arts, festivals. There’s no shortage of places to go in Swindon for nightlife; you can choose between fabulous restaurants, a great range of bars and some of the best nightclubs in the south-west.

Wherever you are in Swindon, you'll never be far away from one of the town's superbly-equipped recreation and leisure centres. These facilities, which are run and maintained by Swindon Borough Council, are available to all members of the public and offer a wide range of first-class leisure, sporting and recreational facilities. Discounted rates apply to Council employees.

Extensive information about the town can be found in the various sections of this website.
