Central Library Readers' Group
We are a friendly group which meets approximately every six weeks at 7.00pm on a Wednesday to talk about books.
On Wednesday 28 January 2009 we will be discussing Reading in Bed by Sue Ge. This has been described by Carol Birch as a "hugely enjoyable and rewarding read".
If you would like more information about the group please enquire at the 'Ask Here' desk, telephone: 01793 463238, or e-mail: jwignall@swindon.gov.uk.
Highworth Library Readers' Group
Highworth Library runs three lively minded, diverse and approachable groups.
Tuesday Reading Group
The next meeting for the Highworth Tuesday Reading Group will take place on Tuesday 6 January 2009 at 1:30pm, when we will be discussing The Other Side of the Story by Marian Keyes.
We now have a waiting list in place for this Reading Group, if anyone would like to add their name to the list please telephone Highworth Library on 01793 462500.
Wednesday Reading Group
This group meets once a month on a Wednesday in Highworth Library at 10:30 -10:45. The October meeting was held early on Wednesday 8 October when we had a very lively and wide ranging discussion.
Last month people read one or more of three suggested titles - The Rose of Sebastopol by Katharine McMahon, Rosie by Alan Titchmarsh or The Return Home by Rose Tremain.
Comments by those who read them were as follows: Rosie was deemed a good light read for bedtime or on holiday; Return Home is a novel about a modern man using modern language (swearing?) and with a plotline that several fel was unconvincing - possibly for younger readers, mainly male; The Rose of Sebastopol was enjoyed by several as a 'story of life' as lived by some women from that era.
For next month we are reading the same books so that people will have the chance to read another of the three. If you would like to join us, please either leave your contact details with a member of staff at Highworth Library or just turn up at our next meeting on Wednesday 29 November 2008.
Thursday Reading Group
Highworth Library holds an evening reading group that meets every 4 weeks on a Thursday evening. We will now be holding our meetings at 6pm rather than 6:30pm.
The next meeting will be on 8 January 2009 when we shall be discussing The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.
We are a friendly group and new members are always welcome, just pop in to the library and pick up the book, then join us for coffee. It is amazing how much extra you get out of a book by sharing it with others.
"Bonkers for Books" Children's Reading Group
Meeting 2 December 2008
Five children attended today.
We discussed The Spook's Apprentice by Joseph Delaney (very spooky and not to be read after dark!) and collected up our reviews of Sebastian Darke Prince of Fools by Philip Caveney (full of thrills and adventure).
As we don't meet during school holidays, the date of the next meeting is six weeks away on Tuesday 13 January 2009 at 4pm. Because this is a longer period than usual, we have taken a selection of books to keep us occupied during the holiday season.
These include: Give Peas a Chance by Morris Gleitzman; books from The Ruby Rogers series by Sue Limb; The New Girl and Being Binah by Madonna; and several books from the My Story series including The Great Plague and Titanic.
As we have just received copies of our fourth book from The Bodley Head Publishing Company, as part of the Random House Book Club of the Year Competition, we thought the holidays would be a good opportunity to read it as well. It is a 75th anniversary edition of The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm by Norman Hunter. The author was born in 1899 and the book was first published in 1933. It will be interesting to hear the group's thoughts at the next meeting.
If you would like more information about the groups, please telephone Highworth Library on 01793 463500, or contact us by email at highworth.library@swindon.gov.uk
Liden Library Readers' Group
We have read in recent months The House at Riverton by Kate Morton, which was enjoyed by all. It had overtones of Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca in the first chapter. After that, we read Perdita: the life of Mary Robinson by Paula Byrne. Most of us enjoyed this book but found it fairly hard to read as it deviated from her life and bought in many people of the times. Probably a very good read for anyone interested in the history of the theatre. The book we will discuss at our next meeting on the 10 June will be Speaking of Love by Angela Young. Our next book is Atonement by Ian McEwan. We had a nice social evening watching the film. We hope to contrast and compare the film with the book.
Our group is very full so unfortunately we cannot take any new members at present.
The Group generally meet every six weeks, on a Tuesday evening between 6 - 7 pm.
If you would like more information about the group, please telephone Liden Library on 01793 463504, or contact us by email at liden.library@swindon.gov.uk

Tracks leaving the dead man's cabin head north towards the forest and the tundra beyond. Journalist, trappers and traders are drawn to the town but do they want to solve the crime or exploit it? One-by-one the assembled searchers set out from Dove River, pursuing the tracks across a desolate landscape ... (www.fantasticfiction.co.uk). This is Stef Penney's first book and it won the 2006 Costa Book Award for First Novel, and was nominated for the 2007 Orange Broadband Prize for Best Novel.
Our group meets on the first Monday of the month at 10 am, generally for about an hour. You are very welcome to come along and join us for the discussion and a cup of tea or coffee.
