Swindon Borough Council is responsible for licensing all taxis (Hackney carriages) and private hire vehicles and operators in the borough, together with their drivers.

Why Taxis Must Be Licensed

We are responsible for ensuring that the travelling public can be assured that all drivers have been examined medically, have a thorough knowledge of Swindon and are fit and proper persons to hold a licence. All vehicles are also checked at least once, and sometimes three times, a year to ensure that they are mechanically sound and safe.

Each vehicle is issued with a licence plate, which must be fixed to the rear of the vehicle. Drivers are issued with a photographic ID card which must be worn at all times whilst acting as the driver of a licensed vehicle.
