Roads, Highways and Pavements Maintenance

Roads - Gritting

Description of Service

Selected routes throughout the Borough of Swindon are gritted and salted whenever there is a likelihood of the road surface temperature falling to freezing.

These routes have been designated as ‘A’ and ‘B’ routes. The ‘A’ routes generally include ‘A’ and ‘B’ classification roads and also major bus routes. The ‘B’ routes include lesser classification roads. Follow the link to view a map showing the gritting routes within the Borough of Swindon.

We automatically commence the process of treating the roads when bad weather is expected. If, however, you are concerned about a particular problem where there is a danger public safety, please contact the StreetSmart Team.

Service Levels

Overall, we treat almost 400 km of the 815 km of roads within the Borough of Swindon. Although we may not treat every road, you should never be very far from a treated road.

We regularly keep in touch with the weather forecasting services to keep abreast of changing weather conditions. Our operational staff are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so that they can swing into action immediately when adverse weather conditions are forecast.
