Ladies of Lydiard – a tour looking at Lydiard’s splendid collection of women’s portraits with local historian and author Frances Bevan, followed by afternoon tea.

Frances Bevan brings the ladies of Lydiard to life, revealing the human stories behind centuries of powder and pomp.

Based on meticulous research and a good dose of humour, Frances Bevan brings the ladies of Lydiard to life, revealing the human stories behind centuries of powder and pomp.

She will be describing the lives of some of her favourite characters, from Anne Leighton, the young wife of Sir John St. John 1st Baronet when the St. John fortunes were flying high to Bessie Howard, the gamekeeper’s granddaughter who married a lord.

Frances Bevan’s recent book, ‘Ladies of Lydiard’ is a highly readable celebration of and sometimes a commiseration with the ladies who called Lydiard Park their home. Copies will be available for sale on the day and Frances will be happy to sign copies purchased.

On the day of your visit, please make sure you arrive at Lydiard House Museum at least five minutes early to be ready for the guided tour.

There will be an opportunity to visit St. Mary’s Church after the tour, followed by a delicious afternoon tea in the North wing provided by the new chefs at Lydiard Hotel and Conference Centre.
